Professor Bo Lu, discussed crucial issues in port and shipping management, particularly focusing on port overcapacity and digital transformation. He noted the contrast in container transshipment levels among Chinese ports like Shanghai (12%) compared to Busan (65%) and Singapore (95%), illustrating the heavy dependence of Chinese port throughput on hinterland supplies, with over 70% destined for Europe and America. Lu highlighted US policies have intensified overcapacity issues.

He emphasized the importance of aligning port handling capacities with logistics demands and the need for precise logistics forecasting, pointing out the evolution of research methods from traditional statistics to the use of artificial intelligence, despite facing challenges like limited sample sizes and model generalization. Furthermore, he found the digital transformation challenges, using Dalian Port as a case study for decentralized information systems which incur substantial maintenance costs and reduce operational efficiency. Therefore, he proposed a multisource data fusion technology-based intelligence platform project aimed at improving supply-demand coordination and enhancing operational strategies. This presentation delved deeply into the adjustments needed in port management and logistics demands, emphasizing the importance of optimizing port operational efficiency through digital transformation and predictive logistics, providing valuable insights and directions for enhancing the competitiveness of the global shipping industry.
